The Part You Play

First of all, when making your appointment and completing documentation, please be honest. There is certain information we must have to provide the best experience possible. This includes your current medications, your weight and height, and your medical history. If you’ve had anesthesia in the past, such as surgery, please let us know. We also need to know if you drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes or use any other controlled substances.

Preparing For Anesthesia

The anesthesiologist will call you before your appointment to discuss how to prepare. They will let you know if you need to stop eating or drinking at a certain time prior to your appointment. They will also tell you if you need to stop taking any current medications.

The anesthesiologist will discuss your medical history with you. This is the time to ask any questions or voice any concerns about the procedure. If you have questions, it helps to write them down beforehand so you don’t forget anything. Following your procedure, you will need someone to drive you home.

What To Expect During The Procedure

During your dental procedure, our primary concern is ensuring you are safe. Our staff will continually monitor your vital signs including your heart rate, blood pressure, EKG, body temperature, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Our anesthesiologists are medical doctors and will address any medical problems that might occur during the procedure.

If There Is An Emergency

Sedation dentistry is like any other medical procedure that involves anesthesia. There are certain risks to undergoing anesthesia, but as long as you are honest with the doctors about any underlying medical conditions, these procedures are completely safe. Should an emergency occur during your procedure, our staff is trained in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Our dental suites are equipped with the latest in life support equipment including AED devices, defibrillators, airway equipment and emergency medications. We also have emergency plans in place with our local ambulance and EMT/EMS services to ensure rapid transport to the local hospital if it becomes necessary.

Patient Safety

GAS has an excellent record for patient safety. In the United States, deaths due to anesthesia have dropped dramatically in the last 20 years, falling from 1 in 10,000 procedures to 1 in 400,000 anesthesia procedures. GAS anesthesiologists take every precaution to ensure the safety of their dental patients.

If you’ve ever had a problem with general anesthesia, it is of the utmost importance to inform your dental provider. It is very rare, but it is possible to experience an allergic reaction to anesthetic medication. Let your anesthesiologist know about any medications you are currently taking so they can take the appropriate steps to ensure you do not have a reaction to the anesthetic medication.
