shutterstock_216677782A July 2015 study in the Journal of the American Dental Association finds that scaling and root planing benefit patients with chronic periodontitis, a gum disease that has advanced past gingivitis. Chronic periodontitis affects 47.2% of adults over 30 in the United States.

Gum disease can cause your gums to bleed and become infected, swollen, or tender. As a result, the infected gum separates from the teeth, and pockets develop.

If left untreated, this infection can spread to the bone and cause bone loss. Furthermore, this infection can result in losing your teeth and may spread to the rest of the body. Periodontal disease has been associated with heart disease, diabetes, premature births, and many other systemic health problems.

Gum disease is caused by a sticky film of bacteria called plaque. Plaque is constantly forming on your teeth; if they aren’t cleaned well, the bacteria in plaque can cause your gums to become inflamed.

It is difficult for patients to keep these types of pockets clean. Scaling removes all the plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) above and below the gum line, making sure to clean all the way down to the bottom of the pocket. We will then begin Root Planing, smoothing out your teeth roots to help your gums reattach to your teeth.

At Shine Dental Group, we complete this Non-SurgicalPeriodontal Procedure in one or two visits. It’s easy to schedule your free consultation, and the healing time is minimal. You can go to work on the SAME Day.

Scaling and Root Planing is the first form of treatment for periodontal disease. Sometimes, deep cleaning is not enough. Further treatment may be necessary to obtain the best periodontal health.
