A Healthy Smile Makes For A Healthy Heart

A Healthy Smile Makes For A Healthy HeartEveryone knows that a little brushing and flossing can do wonders for your smile, but sometimes this feels like it is more important for some of us than it is for others. Sadly, some of us are simply more prone to oral problems than others despite our oral hygiene. However, just because you’ve never had a cavity in your life doesn’t mean you can skip out on brushing. Cavities are just a small part of what your brushing is keeping you safe from.

The Link Between Gum Disease And Heart Disease

Though it may seem like a strange connection to make, there is actually a lot of research behind it. Now that doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone who doesn’t brush is going to have heart failure, but there is definitely a strong connection between the two that can’t be ignored.

Firstly, gum disease and heart disease share a lot of the same symptoms including inflammation and bleeding gums. In fact, gum disease itself is often a risk factor for heart disease. Meaning that if your gums are not in great shape, your heart might not be in too good of shape either.

Secondly, gum disease means that your mouth has very high levels of bacteria. However, if your mouth is filled with it, it is likely that other parts of your body are covered in bacteria as well. This of course includes one of your most important organs, your heart. Simply by being exposed to the bacteria in your mouth can easily cause it to spread and worsen your overall health.

The Link Between Gum Disease And Other Medical Conditions

In research done by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, gum disease is an important risk factor for diseases of the blood vessels and the arteries that supplies to the brain. So not only is your heart being put at risk, but also your brain as well. Many of those with gum disease had not only reported heart problems, but also had a higher chance of having a stroke in their lifetime.

So what can you do to keep your heart healthy?

Keep brushing!

It can be tempting to skip a brushing session or two when your teeth are looking white and healthy. However, missingĀ  a session could really end up counting against you in the long run. With so many different types and flavors of toothpaste and floss out there, you’re bound to find one that is right for you.

Visit your dentist!

Brushing your teeth isn’t the only way to keep gum and heart disease away. As always, having a good dentist that your able to see regularly can make a world of difference to your physical health. With the help of a full cleaning, your dentist is able to easily spot any changes or abnormalities so you can take care of them as soon as possible. If you truly are developing heart disease, your dentist will probably be the first one to spot it and get you the care you need to stay safe.
