What You Need To Know About Dental Implants

what-you-need-to-know-about-dental-implantsIf you’re missing any teeth, your local Long Island dentist may recommend dental implants. Dental implants are one of the most effective ways to replace missing teeth. Implants are permanent and do not have to be removed when eating. But dental implants are not for everyone. There are some complications and risks associated with the procedure that should be discussed with your dentist beforehand.

Possible Complications Of Dental Implants

Although rare, there are a few issues that could complicate the dental implants procedure.

• The Implants Don’t Integrate – When the implant is installed into your jaw bone, the surrounding bone will need to integrate and absorb the implant. If the implant does not integrate, the implant will not be stable. An unstable implant typically fails within a few weeks of the procedure. Those with significant gum disease or multiple missing teeth may suffer complications from the implant not integrating.

• Infection – Much like any procedure, infection is a risk with dental implants. Your dentist should prescribe antibiotics to help reduce the risk of infection.

• Perforation – Depending on where the implant is needed, other surrounding areas could be at risk of injury. Your dentist should make you aware of these risks, especially if working in sensitive areas surrounding the maxillary sinus, inferior border, labial plate, inferior alveolar canal, or lingual plate. If perforation occurs, it could lead to future complications and infections.

• Implant Fracture – Seen infrequently, implant fracture can be difficult to fix. It may require removing the entire implant, with the risk that a new implant will not be able to be installed.

Discussing The Procedure With Your Dentist

What’s most important is that you thoroughly discuss dental implants with your Long Island dentist. Your dentist should be able to explain the procedure in detail, and lay out the pros and cons of the procedure. Your dentist should be able why you are an ideal candidate for the procedure while addressing any concerns that you have.

It’s also recommended that you discuss the cost of implants with your dentist and how they can fit into your budget. If your dentist can’t do these things, you should find another dentist on Long Island that you can trust.

When performed correctly, dental implants can allow patients to resume their day-to-day lives. But patients should do their homework and research before going through with the procedure.
