Recognizing Gum Disease

recognizing-gum-diseaseThe average person’s mouth is full of bacteria, and these bacteria allow the mouth to form plaque, and if you are not brushing and flossing, then this buildup can potentially lead to other more serious issues such as gum disease.

Also known as gingivitis, gum disease is inflammation that is caused by the buildup of bacteria in the mouth, and it causes the gums to become red and swollen, and they will also begin to bleed. While gingivitis is just a mild form of gum disease, it is important to recognize it when it happens, so it can be treated to prevent the loss of bone or teeth.

Signs Pointing to Gingivitis

• You experience frequent bleeding with the gums; typically recognized while brushing and flossing
• The gums become noticeably red and swollen
• The gums begin to feel sensitive and more tender
• You notice that the teeth begin to pull away slightly from the gums
• You experience constant and persistent bad breath
• There is pain while you are eating and chewing

Can you Reverse Gum Disease?

If you and your dentist have been able to spot the early onset of gingivitis or gum disease, then there are a few ways you can reverse it as you move forward.

While brushing will help clean the surface of the teeth, it does not always do a good job of removing plaque, bacteria, and food particles and debris that have been trapped between the teeth. Flossing is needed to get in these hard to reach spots that the toothbrush cannot touch.

After brushing and flossing, mouthwash can be used on a regular basis. The mouthwash will help stop the formation of bacteria in the mouth and will leave you with pleasant smelling breath as well.
Also, if you are experiencing a vitamin deficiency, then your gums and teeth may also be affected. Vitamin D is one vitamin that your mouth needs to help keep the gums from becoming inflamed.

Follow Good Habits

Following all these good habits and maintaining routine checkups with the dentist can help diagnose, treat, and even reverse the effects of gum disease. Leave your bad habits behind and focus on more positive aspects to better influence your health. Smoking, for example, is one such bad habit that should be broken because it is one of the most common things that can lead to a dirty mouth and weakened gums.
